The turbulence that happened in the photovoltaic (PV) industry in 2011 is setting the stage for dramatic changes as we enter the New Year. Many companies are scrambling to figure out the right course to navigate during this time. With the market growing some 340 percent in the last two years, the impacts that companies are facing are on a grand scale, even greater than what happened in 2009 -- after the Spanish solar market collapse. IHS-iSuppli sees two trends dominating the PV landscape in 2012. Costs heading below the $1 per Watt level -- The make-up of polysilicon suppliers has changed considerably in the last few years, which has led to aggressive pricing on materials. These lowered costs are passed along down the value chain, allowing for total costs at the module level to decline significantly. This lowered price is a key differentiator in comparing what happened in 2009 and what is likely to happen in 2012. Module price premiums -- Price declines for c-Si modules were a major trend that occurred in the second half of 2011.
